It is equally important to maintain your gums as well as your teeth.
Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease) damages the gums and limits their ability to protect teeth. This is the greatest cause of tooth loss in adults.
Periodontal Disease is the result of plaque (colourless bacteria that forms on teeth). At its most basic level, Periodontal Disease is an infection of the gum tissue between teeth. The small v-shaped portion of gum between teeth is called the sulcus, which is a breeding ground for tartar and bacteria. An infection of this tissue can cause gums to recede. As a result, the attachment of the gums to the teeth is broken and a pocket is formed. The severity of Periodontal Disease is proportional to the size of the pocket created.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease may include;
- Bleeding gums whilst brushing or flossing your teeth
- Pain while chewing
- Red, sore, swollen gums
- Build up of calculus (tartar)
- Bad breath or bad taste
- Loss of teeth
- Teeth sensitivity to hot and cold
- Changes in bite
- Gums that have withdrawn from teeth and in between teeth
- Movement of teeth
Periodontal Disease is a treatable condition. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, please contact Dentique and arrange an appointment. The diagnosis of Periodontal Disease can be made through your examination, during which x-rays may need to be taken and the depth of the gum pockets measured.
The prevention and treatment of Periodontal Disease is given strong emphasis within Dentique.
